Valentines and Monsters: Let The Right One In

“What he was scared of was not that maybe she was a creature who survived by drinking other people's blood. No, it was that she might push him away" (Lindqvist).

Friday is Valentines Day, and if you're looking for a haunting love story set in a bleak Scandinavian landscape with metaphorical monster appeal (and, really, who isn't?) see Let The Right One In, a Swedish film based on the novel by John Lindqvist.

Everything about this story is subtle and perfect from the visual symbols (squares, boxes, Rubik's cubes, apartment complexes, suitcases, etc.) to the character development, and the chilling "come full circle" plot. Prepare a cozy blanket, hot chocolate, and your metaphysical soul mate.
