Sophie Couldn't Sleep: On First Favorite Characters

The BFG, Roald Dahl
This was my first ever favorite first page of a book, and Sophie was my first favorite character (followed shortly thereafter by Mary Anne from The Babysitter's Club). I can't even describe how comforting it was to my nine-year-old, insomniac self to read about a girl who was going through the same torment in a bed someplace far away. It was the first time I read about a character in a book and thought, "Oh my gosh, me too!"

Of course, this isn't really a book about a girl with insomnia. In fact, soon after this page, Sophie is whisked away by a friendly giant to a land of magic and adventure where she saves the day and becomes a hero, and I don't think her sleep issues are ever mentioned again. But Sophie's lonesome wakefulness is the reason she meets the BFG in the first place, and it was totally and completely my favorite part of the story.
